Project 4:
THE NEW BARIGA
RESIDENTIAL: PROPOSED URBAN RENEWAL SCHEME
CLASS: Architectural Design Studio IV.
WORK TIME: 7 WEEKS.
BARIGA is located in Lagos Mainland LGA of Lagos State. It is bounded by towns including Abule-Ijesha, Shomolu, Onitiri and Igbobi.
Bariga has a high proximity to the University of Lagos, this has caused a high rate of increasing population over the years.
The masterplan layout achieves the following key urban design aspirations:
1. Achieve an efficient site layout.
2. To ensure all units have outlook to open-space, achieved through inclusion of the Central Green.
3. Providing a logical layout, supported by a strong landscape framework.
4. Providing low-cost, low-maintennance housing units for different levels of income earners.
PROPOSED MASTERPLAN
BUILDING AND CLUSTER TYPES
The major concept behind the design is achieving a Social Mix through designing buildings in clusters inevitably causing separation, but not segregation. Also the concept of Walkability was put into high consideration.
The design is done in prototype levels as assumed to be owned by the government.
>The housing units are proposed according to the income levels.
>These housing units will be placed in neighbourhoods of multifamily
apartments to build communal living for a vibrant social community.
>Each neighbourhood (5,000-10,000)
These new dwelling units will have associated facilities to promote social living.
